Pocatello

Pocatello is the county seat of Bannock County, which was also named for a Native American tribe. With a collective population of nearly 76,000 residents, the communities of Bannock County enjoy natural beauty during all four seasons of the year. The first settlement in the county after the Bannock tribe dispersed was Fort Hall, which became an important trading post on the Oregon Trail. When the railroad was laid across the region, Pocatello was built around the junction and became a thriving city.

The Portneuf River, which flows through the county, has the distinction of being one of the very few rivers in the United States whose current flows north. The river flows into the Snake River in north Bannock. The Snake River Basin, which is vast but extends only a bit into the top of the county, lies just above the junction of these two rivers.

Still a town of merchants, the retail trade is one of the largest industries of employment in Bannock County, as well as health care, education and manufacturing. The Idaho State University is a large source of employment for county residents as well, with excellent agriculture and medical programs, among others.

The serene quality of the river and mountains that the Bannock tribe enjoyed is still appreciated by Bannock County residents today, but with the added benefit of being a self-sufficient society with all of the modern urban conveniences and comforts.
